August 2007

Welcome to our August 2007 newsletter!

This month I’ll be sharing with you my ‘six-step program for ageless skin’.

Your face is the first thing people notice when they look at you, and unfortunately it betrays the tell-tale signs of ageing the quickest.

I’ve identified six phases of skincare – phases you will need to complete every night, in precise order, no skipping! – that will help to keep people guessing a while longer…

Phase 1: The Cleansing Phase

You first need to clean your skin, so start by investing in a good cleanser. This will be one that has a pH close to that of skin, that doesn’t dry your skin. The best ingredients to seek out are alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids as these open pores, exfoliate, dissolve oily plugs and take off some of the old, dry skin cells without stripping your skin or leaving it feeling tight and dry.

Toners are the second step in the cleansing process. Why do you need a toner? Try this test: take out your cleanser and wash off your make-up. Wash as you normally would last thing at night. Don’t cheat! Now wipe your face with a toner and look at the wipe. If you see make-up residue, grime or dirt, there’s your answer! A toner removes the dirt the cleanser may have missed.

I recommend my ExfoClean Cleanser (£17.95 for 236ml) with beta-hydroxy acid, followed by my Pore Refining Toner (£17.95 for 236ml) rich in alpha-hydroxy fruit acids.

But you’re not done there! The most important cleaning step is yet to come…

Phase 2: The Exfoliating Phase

Don’t buy into the myth that an AHA/BHA cleanser and toner is all the exfoliation you need. Based on my clinical experience as a doctor this is completely untrue.

Exfoliation is truly the key building block of flawless skin; it helps to stimulate cellular turnover, may encourage the skin’s own collagen-building machinery and enables the key ingredients in skin care products better access to your skin.

Regular exfoliation may also improve skin thickness and skin thickness is what ultimately improves the look of lines; thicker skin is less wrinkled.

Once again there are certain ingredients to look out for and glycolic acid is one of them, but make sure it is there in a strong enough concentration (usually between 8 to 10%).

I recommend my Firming Facial Pads (£32.05 for 60). Packed with glycolic acid they slough off dead skin cells, unclogging pores and helping to increase cellular turnover for increased tone and a healthier texture.

Phase 3: The Skin-Stimulating Phase

Once you’ve exfoliated properly, your skin is ready to be stimulated.

With this step use a water-based serum (water should be listed as the first ingredient) to feed the skin water-soluble ingredients that help to address the appearance of lines, enlarged pores and loss of firmness that occur with ageing.

The common denominator of all these problems is a gradual loss of collagen and collagen breakdown.

Collagen is the major skin protein, responsible for smooth skin and elasticity, and so the ultimate aim in skin care is to encourage the skin’s own collagen-producing machinery and stimulate collagen repair.

My collagen-supporting Growth Factor Serum (£44.94 for 30ml) is designed to do just this.

Using advanced nanopeptide technology, the serum is specifically formulated to trigger the skin’s collagen-producing fibroblast cells.

These highly-specialized skin cells respond to specific ‘growth factors’, often in the form of peptide molecules, which help to stimulate the production of collagen.

Phase 4: The Skin-Building Phase

This phase requires a serum that is lipid-based and this is in addition to your water-based serum, so as to provide other important collagen-building ingredients that are soluble only in lipids (fats).

You can easily identify a lipid-based serum by its ingredients – it will not contain water (at least not as one of the prominent ingredients).

The lipid-based serum performs the very important function of recreating the all-important skin lipid barrier, which serves the vital function of keeping water in the skin.

To recreate the lipid barrier it is best to use identical lipid molecules found in advanced ceramides, essential fatty acids, and linoleic and linolenic acids.

My HydroShield Ultra Moisturising Serum (£69.95 for 30ml) contains a perfect replica of the skin’s own lipids which means it ‘meshes’ into the skin’s structure for optimum absorption and hydration.

Phase 5: The Skin-Sealing Phase

The final touch to seal it all in is the cream. It also has the important function of repairing the protective skin lipid barrier, so that the skin holds on to water.

At this point in your skin care regime, any cream that feels good to you and is not too heavy for your skin is fine, although it is best to use one which contains skin-identical lipids (ceramides).

My ceramide-rich Doctor’s Night Recovery Cream (£34.94 for 50ml) is often a popular choice at night.

Phase 6: The Skin-Protection Phase

As part of your morning routine however, phase 6 applies, and this is where you must protect your skin.

Wear an SPF of 30 not just when the sun is shining, but every day.

The sun is the single biggest cause of ageing so an SPF 30 should accompany you wherever you go, every single day of the year and not just when the sun is shining.

For your face it is best to use a day cream with built-in SPF30 protection instead of a two-step process (first a day cream with no protection and then a sunscreen).

This is because separate day creams and sun screens can dilute each other on the surface of the skin and the SPF protection level decreases significantly, approximately to the average of the two.

My SPF30 Defense Day (£31.95 for 60ml) is a moisturising day cream with built-in UVA and UVB protection.

An intensely hydrating cream packed with vitamins and minerals, it contains micronised zinc oxide, one of the most effective UV protecting ingredients available.

July 2007

Welcome to our July 2007 newsletter!

No doubt many of you will now be thinking of jetting off to sunnier climes, so this month I’m going to share with you my three ‘desert island products’; three of my firm favourites which would make it into my suitcase, rain or shine, all year round!

Peel...

For those of you who are familiar with my philosophy, it will come as no surprise to learn my first product would be my Firming Facial Pads (£32.05 for 60).

The key to healthy skin is proper exfoliation and these powerful cleansing pads do just that.

Packed with glycolic acid they slough off dead skin cells, unclogging pores and helping to increase cellular turnover for increased tone and a healthier texture.

Vitamins, peptides and Co-Q10 provide additional anti-ageing benefits, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and acne scarring.

For visibly improved skin tone and texture, use on a daily basis.

For all-over exfoliation try my larger-size Body Perfect Firming Pads (£29.75 for 30) which are designed especially for use on legs, arms, chest, back and backs of hands.

Seal...

My second ‘desert island product’ would be HydroShield.

Whether it’s the Ultra Moisturising Serum (£69.95 for 30ml), the Eye Serum (£45.95 for 15ml) or the Hand & Décolleté Serum (£29.95 for 90ml), HydroShield helps to rehydrate dry, crêpey skin, dramatically softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

This is largely due to its high-lipid content.

When investing in a moisturiser, the best ingredients to look for are ones that will help to recreate the skin’s own lipid barrier; skin-identical ceramides and essential fatty acids for example, that seal the moisture in.

HydroShield contains a perfect replica of the skin’s own lipids allowing it to ‘mesh’ into the skin’s structure for optimum absorption and hydration, quenching thirsty skin.

Results are immediate and skin feels silky smooth after use – definitely a must-have if your skin is prone to dryness.

…and Protect

My third essential beauty companion? My SPF30 Defense Day Cream (£31.95 for 60ml).

By far the best anti-ageing advice I can give anyone is prevention.

The sun is the single biggest cause of ageing so an SPF 30 should accompany you wherever you go, every single day of the year and not just when the sun is shining.

Defense Day is a moisturising day cream with built-in UVA and UVB protection.

An intensely hydrating cream packed with vitamins and minerals, it contains zinc oxide, one of the most effective UV protecting ingredients available.

It’s a great ingredient but it’s not often used, not in day creams and moisturisers, due to its inability to rub in.

My Defense Day formula however contains micronised zinc oxide, in other words zinc oxide in a form small enough that does rub in, as well as melanin, a natural tanning pigment that enables the cream to blend with any skin type.

So there you have it, my three desert island products!

Double Special Offer!

And this month, for one month only, we’ll be giving you the chance to double-up on all three.

With every purchase of the Firming Facial Pads (and/or BodyPerfect Pads), HydroShield Ultra Moisturising Serum and SPF30 Defense Day Cream, we’ll give you exactly the same again, absolutely FREE.

That’s a massive potential saving of over £160! So get dialling!

June 2007

Welcome to our June 2007 newsletter!

Last month we talked about the single biggest cause of ageing, the sun, and looked at ways of how to protect against its harmful rays. This month we’ll be turning our attention to some of the hidden signs of ageing and how to combat these.

Hidden signs of ageing

For once I’m not talking wrinkles! They are of course a very visible sign of ageing but I want us to take a look at some of the not so obvious signs of ageing.

Look particularly at the T-zone, the area around the nose and cheeks. Do you see enlarged pores and bumpiness under the skin? Does your skin seem dull and sallow? Does it feel dry and thin?

Unless you’re in your twenties, the chances are you answered yes to at least one of the above. The good news it might not be too late to do something about it…

Enlarged Pores

Pores enlarge for the same reasons our skin develops wrinkles; loss of collagen, loss of elasticity and thinning skin. As a result the skin grows less able to close the pores.

Yet enlarged pores aren’t a problem for everyone. Why? It depends in part on your skin type. Thick, oily skin for example is more prone to increased pore size, but fewer lines, whereas thin, less porous skin is more likely to develop lines sooner than enlarged pores.

Our old friend the sun is of course another major contributing factor.

So what can be done? One of the most important things you can do for your pores is to clean them thoroughly every night. This involves cleansing and toning. Cleansing on its own is not enough.

Both the cleanser and the toner should contain glycolic acid (alpha-hydroxy and/or beta-hydroxy acids), which dissolve the ‘glue’ that holds the skin cells together, so surface cells dislodge and slide off.

I recommend my Exfoclean cleanser (£17.95 for 236ml) with beta-hydroxy acid, followed by my Pore Refining Toner (£17.95 for 236ml) rich in alpha-hydroxy fruit acids.

If skin is particularly oily you may wish to use additional exfoliating products.

Clogged pores and bumpiness

Exfoliating pads are certainly ideal for clogged pores and bumpiness under the skin, which is often caused by ‘heavy’ sebaceous products that form bumps, most often on the forehead and around the nose, when they have nowhere else to go.

One of the best ways to deal with bumpy, uneven texture like this is to exfoliate on a regular basis. The skin needs to be stimulated by various acids, high-potency vitamins and peptides in order to breathe and self-renew.

My Firming Facial Pads (£32.05 for 60) contain large concentrations of glycolic acid (10%), which gently sloughs off dead skin, unclogging pores for a thorough cleanse.

Vitamins, peptides and Co-Q10 provide additional anti-ageing benefits, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and acne scarring.

Sallow Skin

Sallow skin usually comes much later in life. Exfoliation becomes very sluggish and skin can become ashen, dull or sallow as dry, old cells begin to occupy the skin’s surface.

The good news is that under every dull complexion, there is a layer of youthful new skin! Again exfoliation is the key. Superficial salon peels are an option but there are plenty of stronger exfoliation kits and peels you can do yourself at home.

In addition to the Firming Facial Pads my Triple Fizzing AHA/BHA Facial Peel (£34.94) or Doctor's Microdermabrasion Cream (£12.95 for 60ml) is ideal for weekly exfoliation.

Thinning, dry skin

And finally, thin dry skin. This usually comes with time; the natural progression of skin is that eventually, inevitably, the dermis thins, collagen breaks down, and skin becomes more transparent to capillaries and veins, partially due to thinning and partially due to subcutaneous fat loss.

Dryness also comes with time. Even if you started out with normal skin, or perhaps even slightly oily skin, your skin is likely to become much drier after the menopause.

Again, thin, dry skin will benefit from exfoliation, but there are certain ageing ‘hot spots’; areas of skin that are naturally prone to thinness and drying, simply because they contain very little.

These include the backs of hands and perhaps most notoriously, the neck and décolleté areas. Don’t forget to pay special attention to these; they are often damaged as a result of sun exposure and will betray your age!

(Source: ‘The Signs of Aging’, Chapter 6, Secrets for Ageless Skin)

Star Product

To help combat the signs of ageing on the neck I have developed a two-step kit My Neck Saver Kit (£39.25), designed especially to restore the neck and décolleté area.

This month’s STAR PRODUCT, the kit comprises Neck Saver firming pads that cleanse and exfoliate, helping to stimulate the growth of collagen while the lipid-based Neck Saver Serum helps to rehydrate and plump the skin, softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

For backs of hands there is of course my delicious smelling - Hand & Décolleté Serum (£29.95 for 90ml).

Special Offer!

With every purchase of the Neck Saver kit we’ll be giving away FREE 50ml samples of ExfoClean/Dermaclean and Pore Refining Toner. So get dialling!

May 2007

Welcome to our May newsletter!

Love it or hate it, the sun is the single biggest cause of ageing which is why it is so important to protect against its harmful UV rays. These break down collagen in the skin and if you lose collagen, the skin thins and becomes less elastic allowing wrinkles to form, not to mention enlarged pores, red capillaries and age spots.

Then there is of course the most serious consequence of sun exposure, skin cancer.

So with summer on our doorsteps, we’ll be turning our attention this month to the importance of skin protection and SPFs, (Sun Protection Factors).

Protect Your Skin

The best way to protect your skin is to wear an SPF and not just when the sun is shining, or when you are sunbathing, but every day.

As already mentioned SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’ and denotes the amount of sunburn protection a sunscreen can provide an average user when applied correctly.

Generally speaking an SPF of 15 provides approximately 93% protection against UVB rays whereas an SPF of 30 provides about 97%.

Ultraviolet B rays or UVB are rays that burn the skin during peak hours (between 10am and 2pm) in the summer months and ultraviolet A or UVA rays are rays that cause ageing all year round, regardless of whether the sun is shining. Both are harmful, causing sunburn, sun damage and skin ageing.

I recommend you always wear an SPF of at least 30 in order to get maximum protection.

Built-in vs Separate SPF

For your face it is best to use a day cream with built-in SPF30 protection instead of a two-step process (first a day cream with no protection and then a sunscreen).

This is because separate day creams and sun screens can dilute each other on the surface of the skin and the SPF protection level decreases significantly, approximately to the average of the two.

Star Product

My Defense Day Cream SPF30 (£31.95 for 60ml), (Best Selling product) is this month’s, it is a moisturising day cream with built-in UVA and UVB protection.

An intensely hydrating cream packed with vitamins and minerals, Defense Day contains zinc oxide, one of the most effective UV protecting ingredients available - not often used in day creams - due to its inability to rub in and it’s unsightly white opaque colour.

Sun blocks often contain this ingredient because it literally ‘blocks’ the sun’s rays. Good news for skin of course but the downside is sun blocks tend not to absorb very easily and often leave a whitish residue.

My Defense Day formula however contains micronised zinc oxide, in other words, zinc oxide in a form small enough that does rub in, as well as melanin, a natural tanning pigment that enables the cream to blend in with any skin type.

Apply liberally on a daily basis before make-up and rub in for an oil-free, matte finish.

Lip Protection

Don’t forget the very important lip area which is also prone to sun damage.

For this I would recommend my Lip Firm Peach Gloss SPF15 (£10.95 for 10g) does just this and due to its natural peachy tint, can be worn without lipstick.

Special Offer!

Defense Day SPF30 usually costs £31.95 for 60ml, but throughout May we’ll be giving away a FREE 0.5 oz/15ml sample with every order. So get dialling!

April 2007

Welcome to our April newsletter!

It’s official! The weather may be all over the place but British Summer Time has begun! The clocks have gone forward, the days are at last getting longer and before long you’ll be wanting to peel off those winter layers. But will you dare to bare?

If you’ve kept your body under wraps since last September, the chances are your skin will be in need of a little TLC.

This month I’ll be sharing with you my top beauty tips for the perfect post-winter body.

Body Beautiful - Arms, Legs and Tummy

During the winter months it is quite common for skin to become dry and scaly, not least because of the colder weather outside but also because of the centrally heated temperatures inside.

You may be tempted to apply extra moisturiser but this won’t be able to penetrate if there’s a barrier of dead skin blocking its path.

As with your facial regime, the key to healthy skin is exfoliation.

Regular exfoliation will help to slough off dead skin cells, allowing moisturisers to penetrate your skin more easily, and help to increase cellular turnover for increased tone and a healthier skin texture.

Body brushes and loofahs can help, especially when trying to scrub those hard-to-reach places, such as your back, but be careful not to over scratch your skin.

I prefer a microdermabrasion cream for gentle, all-over exfoliation. With natural pumice and protective ceramides that helps skin to retain moisture, my Doctor's Microdermabrasion Cream (£12.95 for 60ml) is ideal for sensitive skin and the softer tummy area.
Simply apply with fingertips, massage on and rinse.

Or for a more complete microdermabrasion experience, there’s my Home Microdermabrasion Kit (£19.95) which comes with microdermabrasion cream, handheld applicator and three different massage heads.
(batteries included)

For coarser skin, such as tops of legs and arms, I recommend glycolic acid peeling pads.
My larger-size BodyPerfect Firming Pads (£29.75 for 30) are great for all-over exfoliation. With large concentrations of glycolic acid, they gently slough off dead skin, unclogging pores for a thorough cleanse and a glowing healthy polished look.
The pads can be used on legs, arms, chest, back and backs of hands.

Hands & Décolleté & Neck Areas

When looking after your body, don’t forget to pay special attention to ‘tell-tale’ ageing areas such as backs of hands, neck and chest.

These areas, having much thinner skin than generally all over, and frequently exposed to UVA/B, are often therefore much more susceptible to the signs of ageing.

Hands & Décolleté Serum (£29.95) is a rich ceramide serum designed specifically for the backs of hands and Décolleté (upper chest and lower neck) areas. Both these areas have thin skin and are more frequently exposed to UVA/B rays, therefore making them susceptible to the signs of ageing. Ceramides intensely hydrate the skin.Vitamins and anti-oxidants deliver anti-ageing benefits whilst botanical extracts help to lighten pigmentation.

As with the Hands and Décolleté, the Neck Area is also much thinner than in other parts of our body, and requires extra special care. For the delicate neck area I have especially designed a special two-part kit called the Neck Saver Kit (£39.25).
The kit consists of Neck Saver Firming Pads which cleanse and exfoliate, helping to stimulate the growth of collagen and a lipid-based Neck Saver Serum, which helps to rehydrate and plump the skin, softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Star Product

To give you a head start in the exfoliation stakes, this month’s Star Product is Exfoclean (£17.95 for 236ml).

Exfoclean is an oil-free, soap-free cleanser and exfoliator.

The active ingredient, Beta Hydroxy Acid, gently sloughs off dead skin cells making room for the growth of new skin beneath.

This special non-drying formula also contains vitamins A and E as well as Co-Enzyme Q10 for additional anti-ageing benefits.

Apply to wet skin, massage and rinse for a thorough cleanse.

Exfoclean is gentle enough to be used on a daily basis and is suitable for all-over use; face and body.

Special Offer!

Exfoclean usually costs £17.95 for 236ml, but throughout April we’ll be giving away a FREE 50ml sample with every order. So get dialling!

To place an order call 0870 1900 003 or visit online at www.drdenese.co.uk

Plus, don’t forget our privileged membership loyalty offers!
